Shirley Chisholm said, “You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining.” This quote speaks volumes of how individuals can impact their teams. You can either be that negative team member – always complaining about what is wrong; or the one that helps develop solutions. Over the last few months, many of us have had to check our egos at the door, and do tasks that we would deem “not my job” in the past. Why? Because it was necessary for the success of our teams and the company!
A quality of a great team is the willingness to collaborate with each other. No, everyone will not agree at every turn; however, we must respect each other enough to hear one another and be flexible on your own points. One of the greatest collaborations to ever exist did not happen in a boardroom or on a sports team. It took place in 1963 at an NYC hotel when six civil rights icons announced their plan to host the most notable protest in civil rights history – The March on Washington. The leaders were part of different organizations, with different agendas, race and religions. However, they found a way to collaborate with each other to put on this momentous march for jobs and freedom.
Although the March on Washington was a success (led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964); 57 years later, this country is still trying to figure out how to work as a team for the greater good. Everything is politicized – people have a hard time standing up for what is right and denouncing what’s wrong. With the spotlight on racial injustice these past few months, it is apparent that no one is ready to set egos aside to bring about change. How do we collaborate, regardless of race, to end racial injustice and police brutality to bring “liberty and justice for all?”
