As I start to write this message the following thoughts come to mind:
- Do not cut corners; the short and easy path is not always better and safer.
- Rules and guidelines exist for a reason; they are implemented to prevent situations that most likely happened in the past, and created a negative impact.
- Learn from others, listen to their experiences and follow their advice.
- Safety first.
I am sure that in one way or another all of you have heard similar phrases and advice before. Yet, many of us need to be reminded of them from time to time, throughout our entire lives. Why is it so difficult to learn from others, to follow advice, rules and guidelines? Is it that most humans have to learn from their own mistakes, especially growing up? I do not have the answers to these questions, and I am not trying to generalize my comments as I know this is not the case for everyone. However, I realize that on many occasions I have not had the courage to accept and follow the advice or guidance of others. Perhaps pride and overconfidence are the reasons why it is difficult for me to recognize that my ideas, actions and plans are not always better and safer. I now understand that on many occasions my life could have been much easier and safer. Many accidents and mistakes could have been avoided, if I had had the courage to leave pride and overconfidence aside.

Let’s accept and follow advice from those who have more experience than us. It will lead us, and the ones around us to a better and safer journey throughout our lives.
Finally, I would like to finish by referring to Lead by Example, which I consider to be one of the most important Fundamental Behaviors. Leading by example enables us to influence others in a positive way; it is the best catalyst for change and improvement. Let’s set a good example and always be alert and vigilant about safety.
