As I contemplated what to write about this week’s Fundamental Behavior of “Be an Ambassador,” I began to consider the specifics of how an “ambassador” is defined. In my journey, I came across a quote from Bernard Kelvin Clive, a well-known international branding expert, that struck me. It said, “Everyone has a level of influence that can be harnessed for greater good.”
While these may not be the words Merriam-Webster uses to define “ambassador,” the quote resonated with me on a deeper level because it reminded me that beyond the technical definition of the word, being an ambassador – of yourself, or of a specific company or brand – is about influence.
It is easy to underestimate the amount of influence we have on an individual level. Yet, if you take a moment to think about your everyday interactions, and even your decision-making practices, my guess is a lot of your perceptions and decisions are influenced by the “ambassadors” in your life, such as a family member, friend, or colleague. Perhaps they influenced you to try a trendy new restaurant, explore an off-the-beaten path travel destination, or not to fear failure. Whatever it was, they played a role in changing how you saw something through sharing their genuine positivity, enthusiasm, or willingness to take a chance.
When we think about what this means to us in daily practice at the YKK and YKK AP Group, it is important to recognize that we are ambassadors. We influence those around us every day with how we present ourselves, how we speak, how we dress, how we overall live the other twenty-four fundamental behaviors, and the stories we tell of YKK and YKK AP. While our stories are all very different, each is powerful and impactful.
YKK and YKK AP is all around us (this wonderful website reminds us of that!). I know I take great pride in seeing a YKK zipper on a jacket (maybe someday I may get lucky enough to own a Canada Goose!), or notice the YKK AP logo on the entrance of a restaurant in my neighborhood. Each of these experiences represents an opportunity to share the work that we do and to tell our personal stories of the values and philosophies that guide us.
As a part of this community of employees, I hope that you will recognize these small moments in your daily lives, and share your energy and passion for YKK and YKK AP.
